2020 Chihuly Studio Edition: Medici Macchia

Chihuly is consistently inspired by color, and this was especially the case in 1981 when he set out to use all 300 colors then available in glass. The resulting series was named Macchia, meaning “spotted” in Italian. Each piece consists of a speckled exterior with a contrasting interior color. To keep the two layers of color distinct and give the interior of these forms a shock of bright, unexpected color, Chihuly separates the interior and exterior with a layer of opaque white glass. Each Macchia is finished with a contrasting lip wrap, which adds even more color to the piece while firmly defining its unfurling, organic edge.

Like the Hyacinth Basket, the Medici Macchia is striking for its monochrome color palette. Focusing on bold reds and warm crimsons, the Medici Macchia consists of a mottled red base on both the interior and exterior, layered with additional red tones to create a marbled look. Small speckles of chartreuse and the vivid saffron yellow lip wrap give this Macchia the brilliant contrasting colors for which Chihuly is known, providing vibrancy and dimension to a highly detailed, sculpturally dynamic work.

Vibrant and dynamic, Studio Edition Glass Artwork celebrates Chihuly’s creative spirit with quintessential compositions that span his career. Each handblown Edition is signed by the artist and accompanied by an acrylic vitrine with a black base for display. These pieces vary slightly in size, color, and shape.
