Cedric Mitchell

Cedric Mitchell is a vital voice in contemporary glass, bringing together formal rigor and the expressive spirit of cultural remix. A musician before he was a glassmaker, Mitchell draws from the visual language of funk, the uninhibited energy of Memphis Milano, the color and play of 1990s design, and the immediacy of graffiti. His work reflects a deep engagement with both technique and instinct.

In Funky Forms, fluid silhouettes take shape through intuitive movement, with bold surface markings that evoke gesture and rhythm. Exaggerated curves and off-center compositions invite a sense of play, while quietly challenging traditional expectations of balance and refinement. The collection sits at the intersection of sculpture and design, rooted in street culture but shaped by a disciplined studio practice.

Mitchell began working with glass while studying business at Tulsa Community College, later teaching at the Tulsa Glassblowing School before relocating to Los Angeles in 2016 to study under Joe Cariati. He established Cedric Mitchell Design in 2018 and has since developed a growing body of work that reflects both his personal history and broader questions of access, style, and cultural legacy.

In addition to his studio practice, Mitchell is a mentor and active member of Crafting the Future, supporting emerging artists and working to expand equity and access within the field of contemporary craft.
