Nao Yamamoto uses elements from nature to explore and celebrate the power of life, both its significance and its interconnectedness. In her Ripple series, she creates raindrop-shaped forms covered in hundreds of round glass pieces that reflect light in multiple directions. She says of the work, “glass is often associated with water because of its liquid and transparent qualities. This series represents ripple formations on the waters surface; some ripples are young, just starting to spread, while others are larger and beginning to merge with one another. When gathered in abundance, each insignificant element becomes a powerful whole. Each is handmade and each ripple is hand-applied. The slight irregularities from this handmade process emulate the organic quality of this phenomenon”.
Nao Yamamoto is an emerging glass artist who works in Seattle, Washington. Born in Japan, she earned a BFA from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 2011, and an MFA from California State University-San Bernardino in 2014. In 2017, Yamamoto was chosen to design the 2017 Mayor’s Arts Awards in Seattle Washington.
