Andrew Hayes
Andrew Hayes creates sculptural work using book paper and steel, exploring the dialogue between the delicate, contemplative nature of the book and the structural, industrial presence of metal. He carves and shapes pages from discarded books, introducing steel to support and transform them, revealing the poetic possibilities of both materials. His work balances flexibility, mass, and texture, creating modernist forms from historic raw materials.
Hayes earned his BFA from Northern Arizona University and completed the Core Feloship at Penland School of Crafts. He has exhibited widely, including the National Ornamental Museum of Iron, and has been included in international exhibitions in Sweden and Italy. His work is held in collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Yale Art Museum, Fuller Craft Museum and the Ritz Carlton. He has taught at Penland, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and Anderson Ranch.
