Sejl: The introduction of sails in the early Viking Age created radically new opportunities; the Vikings suddenly moved much faster going on their expeditions, and could span much larger distances at sea. The Vikings reached far destinations with their mighty ships, and landed for instance on the shores of America 500 years before Christopher Columbus. Sails kind of created the Viking Age! The stern of the ship is decorated with the word “segl” (Norse for sails) which is carefully carved with runes from the oldest runic alphabet.
